I f the only thing you dream about is waking up with your feet in the warm sand, enjoying endless kite sessions in boardshorts while learning some new tricks, having a beer watching the sunset and chatting with fellow kiteboarders from around the world, then this is the kite camp for you.
Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka, is one of these recently discovered kiteboarding destinations with knee to shoulder deep lagoons surrounded by palm trees, mellow steady wind, and perfect flat water. For this kite camp we'll be staying in the peaceful Sethawadiya resort run by some of my kiteboarding friends, and facing the huge lagoon that we'll be riding every day. There is no better thing than waking up watching the spot and being able to keep an eye on the conditions ensuring we make the most of our kite camp. This set up makes it perfect for coaching and teaching new tricks, also allowing me to film so that you can come back home with stunning images of yourself kiteboarding in this exotic place.
Lifestyle is slower in Sri Lanka, so come to relax and enjoy a calm yet intense kitesurfing holiday! Check out their video to find out more about the location >>

The wind in wintertime is lighter than in summer. Ranging from 15 to 22 knots, you'll want to bring your bigger kites unlike in summertime. Good thing to bring are some neoprene shoes if you don't mind riding with them. There are some shells and it's better to be safe of cuts throughout the whole trip. Wind is steady, and the spot is a big and safe lagoon, so nothing to be worried about.

Climate in Sri Lanka is Tropical, with temperatures from 24 to 29ºC. You'll only need a few boardshorts and a lot of sun cream or lycra to protect from the rashes and the sun. Tropical climate often means mosquitos are around, so if you are afraid of them don’t forget to bring your spray.

Srilankakite is the kiteschool owned and run by my friends Fabio Ingrosso and Stef Decenciere, and located right in our hotel. They also offer rental so you'll be able to rent equipment if you are willing to travel light. This is an extra cost so get in contact with me for more info.

Since we'll be kiting for many hours every single day (we hope), our sore muscles will appreciate a good full body stretching session at the end of the day. We'll wrap up with a beer to finally call it a day ! ;)

Video Analysis

Nothing better than watching yourself to see the mistakes or new tricks you do. I'll be filming from the water several times during the camp and we'll go over the footage together to analyze your riding. I'll also give you all of your footage at the end of the week so that you can leave with memories of you riding in paradise.

4 hours coaching

I'll be spending around 4 hours/day teaching you new tricks, sharing my time on the shore to watch you and on the water to do the tricks in front of you so that you can visualize it more easily. The rest of the time you'll be free to work on what we've learned or simply enjoy freeriding, and we'll keep discussing about technique out of the water.

One excursion is included for this kite camp. We'll go by boat to an amazing offshore spot which is perfect to practice new tricks. We'll spend the day and eat at the beach. Then there is the possibility to do a 45 minutes fun downwinder along the coast with boat assistance all the way.

Fun & Fly Package

If you don't want to worry about anything book with my partner Fun & Fly and they will arrange a full package with flight included at your convenience. Find out more on their website

This Ecolodge is located near Kalpitiya village, 2h30 away from Colombo airport, right on the lagoon. There is no better thing than waking up watching the beautiful lagoon and being able to keep an eye on the conditions ensuring we make the most of our kite camp. We have chosen the Eco Rooms, which are simple rooms with 2 individual single beds and shared bathrooms and showers. You will be sharing the bungalow with another participant, but if you are looking for more comfort you could have a bungalow with private bathroom at an extra cost. Feel free to ask. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly and we'll have our meals in the beachfront restaurant watching toward the lagoon. Wifi is available and they also offer massages so that you can relax and treat yourself to recover from the hard life you will have in Sri Lanka. ;)
More info

I just came back from Dakhla where I did a kite camp with Mallory: in one word 'Amazing'! He is the best teacher I have had and he made me achieve more during the week than I had expected; I learned a lot. All in a very pleasant and patient way. He was always in or on the water, giving advice, showing how to do it - fully adjusted to my capability and progression level. I don't know how he did it, but he saw every little detail on the water through which he could really give the best advice to improve. Besides the kiting he was a fun guy to hang out with during the lunches and bar etc. I can't wait until I have the opportunity to join one of his next camps, and learn some new tricks again. Thanks for the past week and keep me posted about the next camps!

It was really great. I arrived without knowing how to jump and after a week of careful coaching, smiles, encouragement and precise explanations, I'm leaving doing grabbed jumps, back rolls (not always perfect...) and more. I even have videos and pictures to prove it. ;) Great ! Thanks, Mallory, it was a perfect week.

Wouahhhh! It was so great to be part of Mallory’s kitecamp!!! I learned so much during the 10 days we spent in Zanzibar. Mallory supports and encourages you to reach your target in a fun and safe environment. He built up a team to get the best of everyone and to boost experience sharing. Being part of this clinic is getting the insurance to be coached as long as possible to ensure you will progress as quickly as possible. Mallory is always watching you and pushing you to go beyond your limits. Kiting with him is not only about being in the water trying tricks all day, this is also a whole experience around preparing your body and your mind to improve. Thanks a lot, I will do it again for sure and pull the bar ;)

Do not hesitate ! I was supposed to take the next week of vacations, but when I saw the opportunity to fly earlier for a kitecamp with Mallory, I changed my plan, and what a good choice ! It's coaching, not simple courses ! Mallory motivates and takes each kitecamper to to the next level (and then the next level again), step by step, always smiling and encouraging our fantastic group both on and off the water. When He kites with you, you simply have the best coach with his perfect style in order to replicate your new move, with all the possible variations ! And do not miss the stretching to be ready for the next day. In addition, it was at Paje - Zanzibar, a perfect lagoon and a great island to visit, and he did not choose it by chance. I will go back with him as soon as I can !

I met Mallory during a kitecamp in Dakhla in June 2011. There were 5 students from intermediate to advanced level and Mallory coached us from morning to evening during 7 days. He was instrumental for achieving my progress objectives. Through his presence on the water (on foot, on windsurf, on kiteboard) and off the water (breakfast, lunch, dinner, stretching) he gave me useful advice, pushing me, but also accepting my constraints (fitness, injuries etc). Not only does he have technical experience, he is also a cool guy to hang out with and enjoy a drink at the bar. He is a real people person and a delight to be around at any time of the day. I am strongly considering doing my next camp with him again!

I was in Dakhla for a week and it happened that Mallory was there coaching a group of kitesurfers. Seeing how he was giving advices and how fast the riders were improving, I asked him if I could be part of the party. He is just amazing, understanding in a minute what needs to be done to improve your technics, your style, your way of riding, he takes you from where you are and moves you to the next level. The most incredible thing is when he shows you how to do... it seems so easy and natural... Words will not be enough, so if you have a chance to spend time with Mallory, do not hesitate a second.

Incredible !!!! One week full on, 4 to 6h of kiting each day with Mallory, we say "Perfect" ! Not being too bold (mother of 3 kids), I had never really tried anything kiting and now, after a week closely followed by Mallory ( De la Villemarqué, vice French champion 2008) I can do : jumps, backloop, jibes, pop... And there is for all levels: unhook, handle passes, S bend, railey .... A big thank to Mallory for his patience and teaching methods on the water. Must be re-done...

Hey Mallory, just want to thank you for this wonderful clinic in Dakhla. I have to be honest, in five years of kiteboarding it's the first time I'm taking a lesson and I have to say it really made me progress like I coud never imagine. I was stuck on the few trick I knew and now thanks to you and your coaching I'm taking it to a whole new level !

Dudes, if you're tired of recessing the same old tricks every kite trip you go on and if your friends are not pushing you hard enough to throw BIG, you should think about getting onboard and joining a clinic! Mallory's clinic... well, it's like Kitesurfing Bootcamp!! It's tough, at least as tough as you want it to be! We had great wind conditions all 7 days of the clinic and we ended up riding an average of 5 hours a day. Mallory was always there on the water or onshore for showing tricks, giving advice and filming our moves. It was cool also to learn how to properly warm up and stretch. I took the camp for improving my unhooked moves and kiteloops and I might not be ready for PKRA yet but I definitely have learnt loads!!!

Why the hell did I decide to go to a kitecamp with Mallory?? A bit of sport, sun, beach, cocktail... You look at his website and kiting seams so easy!! That was not the case. Five hours of kiting per day, starting by running on the beach before riding, stretching on the evening... Where am I? In a military camp!! Without joking, Mallory is there to give you the right advices, to teach exercises and he pushes you. You have just understood a move, you try it, crash and lose your board!! You raise your head up and Mallory is already there with your board, smiling and saying "Excellent man! Now let's try a double back loop handle pass kite loop and you grab your board!!"And always with a very good mood! I learned a lot during this week, made a long downwind, kited on different spots!! Plus, out of the water the atmosphere was really great!! So thanks Mallory, and keep me in the loop for your next kitecamp. I am in !!

If we go on a boat trip you will need to know how to stay upwind properly. On other locations you should be able to ride both ways without too much problem. If you cannot go upwind very well, I'll be able to help you out with that pretty easily, but make sure you don't crash every 20 meters because it will be too hard to attend you and the other participants if you are a true beginner.
It depends on how much your body can handle ! ;)  I usually recommend the guys who are not used to kiting too often not to ride too much on the first days because they won't handle the whole week. Some people are really motivated and ride too much on the first days, but they usually end up needing a day of rest throughout the week because their bodies are too exhausted. I'll spend about 3-6h a day coaching everyone and alternating from one person to another, but we're all together on the water. We usually do 2 sessions a day if we know there will be wind. Once out of the water, we can discuss as much as you want, I'll be there to help.
Depending on the number of participants, I do make groups of about four people in order to maximize the attention I can give you. On the first day I evaluate your level before putting you in a group of people with similar level. It's always more motivating to improve with others who are learning the same tricks that you do. It allows you to spot their mistakes and push each other on the water making it more fun. If we are a group of 8 people, I will most likely spend the morning session with half the group and the afternoon with the other half. This way you can practice what we've learned when freeriding, and I will always be around watching your progress even though I am with the other group.
Maybe yes, maybe not. ;) It depends on how ambitious you are and how difficult the trick you want to learn is compared to your current level. I usually like to go step by step and if I see the trick you are willing to learn is too hard for you because of your level, then I'll give you all the keys to attain it as soon as possible. Say you want to learn a Raley to Blind but you still don't know how to unhook. That's quite ambitious to do within a week for example. However, we'll go over the techniques to unhook and pop properly, to do a nice Raley, to land to blind, and then we'll go for the Railey to Blind. We'll be working on the trick over each session until you nail it, and if you don't make it during the camp, at least you'll have learned all the necessary steps to keep working on it back home, until we meet on another kitecamp.
It depends on the destination but most likely yes. Check out in the "More Information" tab of each destination to see if there is rental available on location. If not, I recommend you to take enough gear to make sure you'll be able to make the most of your trip. There is nothing worst than going to a kite trip and not being able to ride because you're not having the right kite size. We usually choose the best time of year for the wind season but unfortunately we cannot be 100% sure. I will also offer you the possibility to test my F-One gear if you'd like to try it. Testing other kites allows you to feel the difference and realize the kind of bar feeling you are more comfortable with.
It depends on the destination! If it's on a boat trip we need to check availability, but if accommodation is at a hotel you can definitely come with them during the kitecamp, whether or not they kite or participate. If they already kite they can perfectly ride around and enjoy the conditions while I will be coaching you. In case they do not kite, in most locations we go to there is also a kiteschool if they'd like to learn, and hotels offer a great place to relax. Some destinations might be more cozy and nicer to hang out though, don't hesitate to send me an email for more questions and I'll do my best to advise.
